Arthur Ragnarsson is born in Siglufjörður, on the north coast of Iceland in 1958 and brought up in music and visual art at his father’s studio. Arthur graduated from the School of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1981. The same year he packed his Fender bass and moved abroad. Arthurs main professions in life are as a stage designer for various theatres and as a graphic designer and illustrator. Today, Arthur makes his living as an artist in partnership with galleries in Finland, Sweden, Germany and Iceland.
Arthur Ragnarssons paintings are spontaneously created by graphite and acrylic on canvas. The spirit of the Surrealists and automatic drawing is influential. Improvisation and intuition lead the artistic procedure. The subconscious mind travels through dreams, impulses and to the unknown.
Arthur Ragnarssons work expresses emotional forms of associations where the artist dream of returning to his home country is the generator. Arthur brings questions of belonging and recognition in society and takes the vision of home to investigate a new identity. The artist isn’t only connected to his cultural heritage, folklore and ghost stories, he is physically bound to home as a geographic place, the landscape with its shifting light and seasons, wildlife and natural forces.
